What is the competitive acquisition program (CAP)?

Since July 1, 2006, physicians have been given a choice between purchasing most Part B-covered drugs and billing for them under the average sales price (ASP) system, or obtaining these drugs from a vendor selected in a competitive bidding process. Physicians who elected to participate in CAP obtain drugs through BioScrip, Inc. the CAP vendor. BioScrip bills Medicare for the administered drug and bills the beneficiary for any applicable co-payment or deductible. Under CAP, the physician continues to bill the physicians local carrier for drug administration services.
