What is the Competition Policy Review Mechanism?
• The proposed competition policy review mechanism is a non-binding process for peer review of competition legislation, policies and enforcement actions that is similar to the types of competition policy reviews undertaken at the OECD as part of its regulatory reform reviews, as well as to the WTO trade policy review mechanism. • The OECD regulatory reform review process is non-binding and combines self-assessment, based on a standard questionnaire, with peer review by responsible committees. A report is prepared that assesses the state of a country’s regulatory regime in core policy areas and sectors, one of which is competition policy and enforcement, as compared to other countries, based on objective benchmarks, and suggests policy changes a country should consider. • The WTO Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM) establishes a framework for non-binding review or peer group assessments of national trade policies.
