What is the “Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements”?
The “Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements” is a book written by Lyle MacWilliam that is based primarily on bias, and not on science. The guide is not peer-reviewed or edited by experts in the field of nutrition. Mr. MacWilliam has established a “blended standard” against which he compares other products. This blended standard is not based on science, nor does he refer to a single scientific study in developing his standard. This arbitrary standard is not a scientifically valid method for determining optimal nutrition. The blended standard simply compares how much of a nutrient is present in one product relative to another. It does not take into consideration the forms of various nutrients, and whether one form is more bioavailable than another. The blended standard does not allow any supplement to score higher than 100% even when a larger amount of a nutrient is present than is in the blended standard and may be more appropriate. Again, this blended standard was arbitrarily set
