What is the Community Police Academy?
The Community Police Academy also known as the Citizens’ Police Academy gives the citizens of Manhattan Beach a better understanding of law enforcement and the City’s Police Department. The program is facilitated and taught by Police personnel. The Academy is intended to: • Provide Manhattan Beach residents and local citizens with knowledge of the Police Department, what they do, and how they do it • Enhance communications between the police and the community and improve the level of understanding of the role each plays in public safety • Allow participants to experience hands-on exercises relating to the duties, services and responsibilities of policingAdditionally, participants are provided a forum for their questions so that their concerns may be addressed. During the program, citizens attend lectures on various facets of police work and learn about the services the police department offers. The Academy takes place once a week for 10 weeks. The Community Police Academy is a ten-week program designed to educate the public in the operations of the Seattle Police Department, while also giving the Department a chance to obtain valuable feedback from the community. The purpose of the Community Police Academy is to increase understanding between the Seattle Police Department and the community members of Seattle through education and interaction. Community participants will become familiar with various facets of the Seattle Police Department and gain insight into law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and the daily work of police employees. With increased understanding, Seattle’s community and police can work together and achieve realistic solutions to neighborhood problems relating to crime, fear of crime, and neighborhood decay. It is hoped that increasing community awareness will challenge some of the myths and images of law enforcement and provide a realistic view of police procedures. COVERED TOPICS DURING TH
