What is the Committee on Preschool Special Education Program (CPSE)?
Every school district has a CPSE that decides a child’s special education needs and services. The CPSE is responsible for children ages 3-5 years. Members of the Committee are people who have a broad range of experiences planning for and/or working with students with disabilities. However, as a parent you know your child better than anyone else and have valuable knowledge to bring to Committee discussions. Together you will work to make sure that special education programs and services are provided to meet your child’s needs. Who Is Eligible? Children are eligible for the Early Intervention Program if they are under three years old AND have a disability OR developmental delay. Children are eligible for the CPSE if they are between 3 and 5 years old. A disability means that a child has a diagnosed physical or mental condition that often leads to problems in development (such as Down Syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, vision impairment, hearing impairment).
