What is the Commission for HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa?
CHGA is the Commission for HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa convened in February 2003 by the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Under the chairmanship of K. Y. Amoako, CHGA is mandated to complement the vital work on transmission and prevention done by UN and other agencies with policies and programmes to mitigate the socioeconomic impacts of HIV/AIDS on African states. This involves developing more context-relevant policies and programmes that are based on a deeper understanding of the relationship between HIV/AIDS and the state capacity to maintain economic, social and political stability despite high prevalence levels.
