What is the color of Goldfish on their original habitat?
Goldfish are a domesticated species, so there are no strictly wild goldfish (although there are goldfish that have “naturalized” after they were released into ponds). But they are presumed to have been bred from a species of Asian carp that was probably gray, with occasional color morphs that were silver or yellow. The ancient Chinese breeders selected the most gold-colored ones and bred them to each other. Over many generations, this resulted in the modern goldfish. If goldfish are allowed to breed indiscriminately, the descendents tend back toward this presumed wild type– a gray carp.
