What is the Clone Saga?
Spider-Man had grown too dark and moody and just wasn’t the Peter Parker people knew any more. A decision was made: A clone of Peter Parker, thought dead, would be brought back and eventually revealed to be the real Peter. Unfortunately, that was not to be. Constant editorial changes sent the story back and forth, often contradicting itself as a new editor rejected a previously planned storyline and forced the books to go veering off in a new direction at the last moment. Speculator-market pandering, the bane of the 90s, reared its ugly head too. The writers were forced to create “events” that had no real substance behind them in an effort to get more sales. One reset of the numbering to #1 wasn’t good enough, so first all the spider-books had a title shift forced and started at #1, and then restarted with their original titles as new #1s scant months later. In short, it was a terrible mess, and the way the story ended up going was nearly the direct opposite of the original plan. For m
