Genotyping can help to identify individual patients who are more likely to have problems metabolizing CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 drugs in the intended way. Scientific research has shown a correlation between certain CYP450 genotypes and response to many widely prescribed drugs. Inherited variations in these genes can affect drug efficacy as well as the type and severity of side effects, from nausea and dizziness to serious adverse drug reactions requiring hospitalization or, in extreme cases, causing death.
