What Is The Classification Of Animals That Use Gravel To Grind Their Food?
If you’re thinking of “gastrolith”, that is the name for the stones (of various sizes) ingested by animals, and used to grind food (as in many birds), or as ballast (as in crocodiles). Similar functions have also been attributed to the gastroliths found associated with dinosaurs and othere extinct animals. I’ve never seen the name used to describe the animals themselves, though. If you analyze the Greek roots of these words: “Gastro-” means “stomach, gut” “Lith-” means “stone” “Pod-” means foot.
