What is the Church of Scientology and why is the Internet upset? Can those Net Nasties just leave the innocent church alone?
A1.) Hey! How did those Scienos get into my question file? Oh… anyway… the Church of Scientology is an alleged religious organization founded many years ago by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. They existed somewhat oblivious to the Internet (and vice versa) until a church representative found and tried to remove the alt.religion.scientology group with a so-called “rmgroup” message. This bold stroke, allegedly forged by CoS-hired laywer Helena Kobrin, was met with a collective yawn by Usenet sysadmins. There is no evidence that even one site removed this group, and many may have even added it to see what the fuss was all about. Since then, there have been reports on the newsgroup of regular posters being harrassed in more forms than you can count.
