Shortly after Mendel’s work in 1900 on the nature of hereditary factors in 1903 Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri independently recognized the relationship of gene and chromosomal inheritance. They put forward the hypotheses that genes are on chromosomes , a proposal known as the chromosome theory of heredity. The chromosome theory of theory of heredity states that the chromosomes are the carriers of the genes. The first clear formulation of the chromosome theory was made in 1903 by Sutton and by Boveri, who independently recognized that the transmission of chromosomes from one generation to the next closely paralleled the pattern of transmission of genes from one generation to the next.
