What is the Chesapeake Bay Program doing to eliminate fish consumption advisories?
A year ago, the Chesapeake Executive Council signed the Toxics 2000 Strategy (99 kb). In this Strategy, the Chesapeake Bay Program commits to ensure that fish are safe to eat by all Bay watershed residents and visitors. Although it will be many years before all fish consumption advisories are eliminated, there are some immediate steps the Bay Program is taking to ensure fish are safe to eat. • Spread the Word: The first step the Bay Program is taking is to ensure that the public is aware of the fish consumption advisories, particularly those populations that are more sensitive to contaminated fish such as children, women of child bearing age, and those that consume fish as a major part of their diet. • Control Point Sources: The Bay Program has committed to go above and beyond the regulatory programs to further reduce and prevent the chemicals that cause advisories from entering the Chesapeake Bay.
