What Is The Cheapest Way To Travel Between The Hawaian Islands?
I travel between the islands frequently for business: I’ve got two island hops on small airlines scheduled for this next week, as a matter of fact. The Superferry has run into all sorts of problems. It’s not running currently. I think it’s only made two or three actual paying voyages since it arrived. When it does run, it can take vehicles, but that’s part of why the local protestors are standing on the docks waving signs when you arrive. There are regular ferries running between Lahaina, Maui and Kaunakakai, Molokai or Manele Bay, Lanai. The Lanai ferry is $25 each way, the Molokai ferry is between $34 and $40 each way. Those do not take cars, only a few dozen passengers. The channel is rougher in winter. Try to find a spot where you can feel the breeze–but not the surf–on your face. There are jets for Aloha and Hawaiian that fly among the 4 major islands. The largest aircrafts landing on Lanai and Molokai are the deHaviland Dash-8 turboprops of Island Air, which are about the size
The Superferry is currently not running. When it is back up, it will only be going btwn Oahu & Maui for the near future. So you cannot plan on using the ferry unless you can confirm it is running again by the time you come. They took it down for repairs earlier than anticipated because they were unable to sail anyway for almost 2 weeks because of high seas. There has recently been a bit of a fare war btwn the airlines, w/ fares running as low as $39 one way. Update… today’s Honolulu Advertiser has an article that states the Superferry is due to start service again on March 25th.
