What is the cheapest cell phone and service?
We keep a cell phone just for emergency use. I checked a lot of deals but found most were just too expensive for something we’d hardly use. I finally settled on a phone/plan through Cingular/AT&T that is a prepaid deal. To put it more simply, I paid $100 for the phone and a year’s worth of time that will cost 25 cents a minute. That’s several hours’ worth and even that is more than we need but it’s nice to have for emergencies and not have a monthly service charge. As you can figure, the $100 sounds like a lot but it covers a nice little phone (we have the Motorola C139 which has a color display, text-messaging, voice mail and some other features you wouldn’t expect for the price) and a whole year is covered once and for all. When the year is almost up, another year can be paid for and the leftover time is carried over. There are also refills available for 90 days – I think they’re $25, $50 and $75.
