For a twitter status update the limit is 140 characters. For Facebook, the limit is higher, like 250. If you post a photo on Twitter, the character limit added in the status is 120 total.

For both status messages, the limit is ‘one message’. By default, this limit is 160 chars, so ffacebook, including the fb keyword, the chars should not exceed 160. Some service providers break longer msgs into two, even if they’re a few chars below 160, so make sure its not too long or else it will be ignored if broken.
