What is the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine?
The Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine is a rigorous examination that covers the medical and musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine. Today, a doctor must first be board certified in a primary care specialty (like Family Medicine), and then complete an additional 12-24 month “fellowship” training program in Sports Medicine to even be eligible for the examination. The two medical organizations that examine physicians are the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). They are the only two board certification organizations that UW Physicians and Hall Health Center recognize for their doctors.
