What is the cause of dyslexia/reading disabilities?
Researchers have identified poor phonological processing abilities as the reason some individuals have difficulty learning to read. Phonological processing refers to the ability of an individual to understand that words are comprised of sounds and that these sounds can be used as linguistic building blocks. Learning to read involves decoding text into sounds and blending those sounds to produce words. Without adequate phonological processing skills, individuals have difficulty decoding text, blending sounds, and thus, learning to read.
