What is the cause of arthralgia in itramuscular iron therapy?
There is no for-sure answer, but theoretically, any injected material that cannot be broken down can cause irritation because it just ends up sitting in tissue. Theoretically, any injected material can end up in skeletal joints, because the joint capsule does not have a barrier to substances in the blood unlike most other parts of the body. Put it together, and it makes sense that injected iron can cause some arthralgias. For anemia, oral iron supplementation usually makes sense unless its not tolerated or insufficient.
