The capital of the Basque Country is Vitoria-Gasteiz. The city is the capital of the autonomous country Basque. It is located in the Northern Spain. In the Spanish the word Gasteiz is termed as Vitoria. So the official name is derived from the combined Spanish and Basque name of the city. The city was founded by the Visigoth king Leovigild in the year of 581. The city was founded in the name of Victoriacum. The city was granted an agreement in the 12th century. Alfonso VIII took the city under his kingdom in the year of 1200. In the time of Peninsular War it was the site of the battle between English General Arthur Wellesley with French in the year of 1813. The French army was defeated in the war. Now-a-days Vitoria-Gasteiz is a leading manufacturing centre. There are several medieval buildings could be found in the city. According to the report of the year 2002, the total population of the city was estimated around 216,852.
