Camping is primitive on the islands. There is no water, electricity, telephones, or concessions (e.g., food or supplies) available on camping islands. There is limited cell phone reception, and a “pack-in, pack-out” policy.

The popular term is “Dry camping.” That is to say there are no water, sewer hookups, or electrical outlets. You are on your own and must be self sufficient. The only thing supplied by the government is a few pit toilets, a few porta-potties, some asphalt campgrounds, some camping pads (gravel), and plenty of sand. You can camp anywhere in the sand as long as you are 10 ft. or more from the road. You d better have 4 wheel drive for that.

Camping is an important component of a Teen Treks adventure. Being in a natural setting without the disturbance of televisions, movies and other urban noise encourages the group to get to know each other. A campfire in the woods is a perfect place to let loose. Teens find themselves singing, creating talent shows, swapping stories, and simply listening to the quiet of nature together. Our time camping is the glue for the road! On your travel adventure we will stay in campgrounds reserved in advance by Teen Treks staff. We use private, municipal, and state and national campgrounds. Each campsite has a fire pit and picnic tables. Some campgrounds are fancy (with a pool or beach, rec hall, and facilities for various sports), while others are simple and rustic, in a beautiful natural environment.
