It’s about one of the greatest lies ever told to the American public. It began with the campaign for president: portraying JFK as young, vibrant and in touch with the common man, as compared to the incumbent Eisenhower, who was portrayed as old, out of touch and decrepit. The truth there was that Kennedy had lived a life of luxury off the spoils of his father’s ill-gotten wealth and his health was anything but “young and vibrant.” Ike had governed with a policy of avoiding unnecessary conflict. As such, he’d instituted a policy of “all or nothing” regarding the use of nukes. The policy was designed to keep the U.S. out of small scale, insignificant wars that had little bearing on either U.S. interests or the world stage.
