The Butte Schools Self-Funded JPA (BSSP) was organized in 1982 (then called the Butte School Districts Self-Funded Medical Benefits JPA) to self-insure member districts employee benefits including medical, dental, vision and life benefits. Most school districts in Butte County, plus the Butte County Office of Education (BCOE) and the Butte-Glenn Community College District (Butte College), participate in the employee benefit programs to cover over 4,300 employees and retirees as well as their dependents. In 1996, a property and liability program was added which now covers the BCOE and twelve school districts in Butte County. Combined, these districts and BCOE have nearly 20,000 ADA with property and equipment over $365,000,000 in total insured value.
