What is the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE)?
A. The BOEMRE, a bureau in the U.S. Department of the Interior, is the Federal agency responsible for managing the energy and mineral resources in Federal waters offshore the United States, as well as collecting and disbursing the revenues from the production of these resources, and overseeing renewable energy projects in Federal waters. In managing the offshore energy resources, the Bureau conducts environmental studies, issues leases, and regulates operations conducted on the Outer Continental Shelf. The regulatory responsibilities include issuing permits for energy and mineral exploration, development, and production and inspecting operations during all of these activities. The Bureau manages the offshore resources in concert with other Federal, State, and local agencies and in consultation with the public. Management of renewable energy projects involves similar oversight activities.
