What is the budget allocation for tourism development and how do you intend to utilise the same?
We would like to have private participation, as we have identified certain islands that would require development. The A&N tourism department in liaison with other governments departments, has developed infrastructure in certain areas. We would invest in acquiring some more tourism products. We are thinking of a cable car project, which would connect PB with Ross islands. We are developing infrastructure in some islands like building restaurants and then leasing them to the private sector to run, so that they do not have to make capital investments. The total budget allotment for tourism development in the island is RS 6.5 crore. Island tourism festival is one area where we invest a lot. We have started promoting tourism in a big way and when the tourist traffic increases then there will be more resorts of ours. We are currently working on formulating a tourism policy, as we do not have one. The rest of the funds would be utilised as per requirement.
