What is the Bridge School, the Bridge, etc..?
Neil and his wife, Pegi, founded the Bridge School to teach methods of communication to severely physically handicapped children. The goal of the school is to enhance communication with and for the kids with a year or two of training at the Bridge School and then return them to the regular school system. The annual (except for 1987) Bridge School Benefit concert has been a highlight of the Bay Area’s fall music schedule. Notable performers have included (in no particular order): Bruce Springsteen, CSNY, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir, Pete Townshend, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Nils Lofgren, David Bowie, Beck, The Pretenders, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Pearl Jam, Elton John, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Cowboy Junkies, Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, … and more. Recently, as a fundraiser for the Bridge School, a CD comprised of prior Bridge School performances was released on Reprise Records.
