Bad Boy, by Walter Dean Myers, is about his life in Harlem, New York. He is a high school dropout, very smart and loves to read and write poems and stories. In this book, he shows what life was like for African Americans in the 1940s and 1950s. He is about 15 or 16 years old and goes to Stuyvesant High school. Sometimes instead of going to school, Walter wanders off into Central park where he reads and writes all day until he has to go home. There are many interesting characters. First, there is Walter’s mom and dad, with whom he was never really close. Then Eric who was Walter’s best friend in middle school; and then there is Frank. One day Walter saves a guy named Frank who was being beat up by a gang. They become best friends. Frank shares all of his secrets with Walter, which shows how trustworthy Walter is. The story is a good example of loyalty, trust, and bravery.
