What is the Birman Naming Tradition?
Birman kittens that are registered are most often registered using the tradition that started many years ago. To help breeders keep up with how cat ages, it developed into tradition for all kittens borm within a calendar year be named with the same letter of the alphabet. In the United States, 2007 was an “E” year, 2008 was an “F” year, 2009 a “G” year, and 2010 an “H” year. Breeders are not required to follow tradition, but most do. All kittens produced at registered catteries are named starting with the cattery name, followed by a selected name starting with the appropriate letter. Fynnagan, born in 2008, is “MysticMtn Fynnagan”, MysticMtn being the cattery that bred him. Likewise, Gretchen, born in 2009, is “BumbleBe’s Gretchen”, with BumbleBe being the cattery that bred her.
