NASA has a series of four large, powerful telescopes which are currently based in space. These are known as the Great Observatories satellites. The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (which was formerly known as the Gamma Ray Observatory, which was abbreviated as GRO) was launched in the year 1991 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-37.
