What is the biggest mistake people make in do-it-yourself design projects?
A. People put too many things in a room. Less is really more. You can find the most amazing bit of treasure at a flea market that was only $10. But if it’s sitting next to four other things, no one is going to see it. It’s really about editing and letting everything in the room stand on its own, but yet be integrated with the total design. Q. What are some key suggestions that you like to pound into viewers’ heads during your show? A. The first thing is don’t be afraid of color. A little subtext under that, once you’ve picked a color, go two shades darker. The color that you pick on the color swatch is going to be light once you put it on the wall because of the way natural light bounces off a room. If it’s two shades darker, it will look to your eye the same way it did on the color swatch. Avoid “the centrifugal force of room design” – that’s when you spin the room around and all of the furniture goes to the outside walls. People think that makes a room look larger, but it actually ma
