What is the biggest issue facing the City of Cape Coral today?
The biggest issue facing The City of Cape Coral is the huge debt we have accumulated during recent years. Most of this debt was incurred because we have over paid for utilities and related infrastructure. This debt will have crippling effects on Cape Coral residents and businesses for decades to come. This amount of debt effects our job market. The more revenue we remove from our economy (to pay off the debt) the less money there is to spend on goods and services. This doesn’t bode well for our local businesses community and without a flourishing local businesses community we are looking at less jobs and a smaller economy with less people to pay off the debt. Keep in mind debt service requires a bigger budget, more spending and higher taxes. We have incurred $835 million dollars in debt which can mostly be attributed to the Utilities Expansion Projects (UEP) and Facilities Expansion Projects (FEP). We need to develop an alternative way to deliver the utilities which would help pay down
