What is the big deal with breastfeeding in public?
I was just reading a thread at another message board that got derailed into a ‘breastfeeding in public’ fiasco of an argument. As far as I could tell, some people have fixed in their head that a nipple is solely a sexual organ, and that even drawing attention to the fact that women have breasts is somehow tantamount to masturbating in public (I kid you not. They made this comparison). My working theory is that some people have the sexual (im)maturity of a pubescent boy. On the other hand, discreet is probably the watchword here. As much as I’m a fan of breastfeeding, I would think it socially inappropriate for a mother to wander around topless. An infamous glimpse of nipple on the Superbowl halftime show started a huge brouhaha about decency standards. The mere possibility of seeing breasts, even as completely non-sexual objects, makes some uneasy.
