What is the Biblical meaning of covenant?
In Biblical terms, a covenant is a promise that God makes to which we agree, which becomes our promise to God and one another. It refers primarily to the promise of a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ, if we agree to receive him as Savior and follow him as Lord. When we do that together, we fulfill the covenant, which is to love God and one another, to be a people who are blessed by God, and a blessing to the world. That is God’s dream for us. What is the purpose of our covenant? Our covenant invites us to practice some basic Biblical disciplines through which God delivers the dream. It’s happened before: When God’s people returned from exile, they made a “firm covenant in writing” to “observe and do all the commandments” of the Lord… (Nehemiah 9-10). The people signed it, to say to one another, “You can count on me; we’re in this together.” It helped to solidify and unify their community, to take a significant step toward fulfilling their dream. That is the purpose o
