You can get a good basic machine that does zigzag and a couple other variations for under $200. I have a Singer “Craft Mate” that I got for graduation in 1999 and it’s going well. We are Singer loyal in my family, but I’ve heard that in the last few years their quality has gone down. Other brands I’ve heard good things about are White and Husqvarna.
