What is the best way to travel short distances (within cities) in India?
By bus: You will see buses everywhere in India. They are very popular among Indians, but are very crowded and, frankly, confusing. We do not recommend riding the bus to get around. By autorikshaw: These are automated, open-air, three-wheeled vehicles. They are available for hire, and can be flagged virtually anywhere. Hiring them almost always requires bargaining with the driver. They are not very safe for long distances, so we recommend that if you choose to use them at all, you do so for short distances only. By subway: Delhi has just started a subway system, and it is excellent. Using the metro in Delhi is a good way to get around and avoid traffic. Mumbai has had a subway system for quite some time, and it is used by over six million people daily. The trains are very crowded and uncomfortable, so we do not recommend using the Mumbai metro.
