What is the best way to take notes in lectures?
There are lots of different systems. Different people find different methods more effective than others. Two of the most popular systems are the Cornell system and Mind-Mapping. In the Cornell System, you divide your page in two vertical columns. On the right-hand side, take your notes in point form. On the left-hand side, write headings and key words that will help you recall the main ideas. Review your notes after the lecture. Cover the right hand column and using the key words as cues, try to recall the main ideas. Add additional information and clarification in the left hand column as necessary. If you have reactions or questions, record these in the left column. In Mind-Mapping, you use visual elements like colour, drawings or cartoons, stars, arrows, and other graphic elements. Turn your page sideways; otherwise you’ll be tempted to just start writing the usual summary-type notes. In the middle of the page draw a cartoon or picture that symbolizes the main topic.
