What is the best way to move belongings across the country?
OK, cheapest does not mean best. The BEST way to move your stuff is to hire a well-known, bonded, insured, reputable mover such as Mayflower or Allied. The CHEAPEST way is probably to hook up with somebody on Craiglist who happens to have a big truck or the capacity to haul a trailer. Not great, because who the heck is this person you’ve just handed over all of your belongings to? Based on experience, I would say you do want to avoid these two things: Don’t get hooked into one of those sites that take your info and pass it on to small moving companies. I did that when I moved from LA to Oregon, and the price was great–until they triple billed me, and I had to spend almost a thousand in court to get their extra charges taken off my credit card. Don’t go U-Haul (except for maybe a trailer that hooks onto your own car).
