The Trafford Centre was built to cater to traffic on the motorway, so yes, it’s a bit awkward to reach from Manchester city centre. But a tram from Victoria Station (which is connected to the MEN) to Stretford takes about 17 minutes on an Altrincham service with no need to change. Then you walk a few steps from the Stretford tram stop to its car park where the Trafford Centre shuttle bus is waiting, which takes 15 minutes to reach the shops, which isn’t that bad really. I doubt a taxi would be any quicker – traffic can be notorious around it, especially on weekends – and a taxi would certainly be far more expensive, but you could ring a taxi firm to find out. About the only big shop they have at the Trafford Centre which you won’t find in Manchester city centre is John Lewis. Selfridges, M&S, H&M, what seems to be the world’s largest Primark etc you will find in and around Manchester’s Arndale which has recently been tarted up and expanded.
