What is the best way to backup the mp3 files on a computer?
Zip files will not damage the MP3’s but in the event that the files become corrupt it is much harder to recover data from a ZIP file than it is to recover a damaged MP3. Zipping will make little difference to the size of an MP3 file as it is already compressed to buggery (mpeg compression.) The best thing you can do is either have a dedicated hard drive in your computer for storing them (a different drive to the one with the operating system installed.) Or burn them to a series of DVD’s (depending on how many MP3’s you’ve got.) Re-writable discs are the way to go as you can update your collection on the same discs.
