What is the best visa for a temporary research or teaching visit?
UCSC generally sponsors J-1 exchange visitor visas for academic research and temporary teaching positions. Typically these are postdoctoral scholars, professors, or advanced graduate students from other countries. The U.S. Department of State requires Exchange Visitors in the Short-Term Scholar or Research Scholar category to have academic credentials (generally at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent) and experience appropriate to the field of endeavor. Exchange Visitors must additionally qualify for a UCSC academic appointment. Before we can sponsor a J-1 visa for a visiting scholar, there must be a UCSC professor or academic department who wishes to invite the visitor and supervise the work. The request must be approved by the academic dean. Proof of sufficient financial support is required either from the visiting scholar or university, depending on the arrangement.
