I think what you are probably asking is this: (1) What is the best distro (distribution) of Linux – I’ve heard that Ubuntu is good – and (2) which desktop is better, KDE or Gnome? 1) Ubuntu is indeed a very good distro to start with, particularly for a novice, but there are other good ones too. Fedora is very widely used and works very well; use it if you want to be right in the mainstream. CentOS has the advantage of being just like Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) but it’s free; use it if your career requires you to be as familiar as possible with RHEL, which is used by many organizations. 2) KDE and Gnome are about equally good. I’d go with Gnome because it’s more in the mainstream, at least in the US and, for a novice, that’s important. But many distros include both so you can try both of them and see what you think. I’d say that KDE is more like Windows, which may make you a little more comfortable. KDE and Gnome are remarkably similar and hopefully some day the two will be merged
