There is no one “best” university music program but there are many exceptional choices. I recommend you find the one that is best for your son. His choice will depend on his skill level, how competitive he wants his program to be, what kinds of ensembles he is interested in, what he wants to focus in, and who he wants to study with. I cannot stress enough the importance of his teacher. If a music major does not get along with his or her teacher their college experience will be miserable. If he wants to study music education, look for a program with a strong education component (often schools with a good College or School of Education produce the best teachers). If he wants to be a performance major, look for a very competitive (ie: large) program with a wide variety of performance ensembles and strict jury and recital requirements. This will make him a strong musician in a competitive market. If jazz is his thing, look for multiple jazz ensembles and a jazz faculty of at least two prof
