The article jmf 1 linked is full of very good information. You should definitely read that. As far as what breed, I would have to disagree with the Netherland Dwarf. I used to raise rabbits and my main breed was the Netherland Dwarf. I can tell you from having hundreds of them that those little buggers can get quite an attitude! One of the more gentle of rabbits is the mini lop. The are small and good tempered. If size of the rabbit is not an issue, I had several Flemish Giants and all of them were very sweet and docile. How much you play with and how you treat the rabbit will have the biggest impact on how the rabbit reacts. With love, any breed can be a good pet. If you are going to a pet store, usually they have only carry mini lops, dwarfs or Dutch (half black, half white). If you want something a little bit more exotic, look around you area for a breeder and check out some other breeds like the Flemish Giant, or a Rex (super soft velvet fur). To have a rabbit around cats (like I do) you are better off with a larger rabbit with a docile nature. Anything that runs is going to end up with your cats chasing it – so you want something that won’t run. My choices would be an angora (if you are willing to do a LOT of grooming…and I mean a LOT) as my angoras have always gotten along very well with my cats as they’re so placid that cats just can’t get a reaction out of them. My cat has playfully jumped onto my angora many times (he doesn’t play with his claws out so the rabbit was safe) and the rabbit never moves. The cat gets confused and walks off. Another lower maintenance placid breed is the New Zealand. These are my favourite of all short haired breeds – the whites are my number one rabbit breed. They are very large, especially the girls, and quite placid. Dwarf lops would also be a possible choice, but they are not quite as big as the New Zealands. As far as introducing it, I would keep it in a cage inside (wire cage) handlin
