What is the best time to go to venice and florence re costing, weather, crowds and accommodation?

I live about two hours from both Venice and florence and spend a lot of time in each. With respect to cost and crowds the best time to go is either immediately before or immediately after Carnevale in February. It’s almost empty and rooms that go for 150 euro per night or more at other times of the year can go for 80 euro per night. However, that isn’t the best time for weather and some restaurants and other businesses may be closed. Overall a good tradeoff for tourist is mid- April to mid-June or September to October. However, if lower prices and avoiding huge crowds is your criteria, you’ll don’t want to be in Venice on the first weekend of the month. The Historical always draws a big crowd – it was just last Sunday this year. The Venice Film Festival will also be running.
