What is the best time of year to prune my trees?
Pruning deciduous trees during the later part of their dormancy season is considered the best time for most pruning to take place. Pruning in late winter, just before the start of new growth in the spring will leave fresh wounds exposed for only a short period of time before the trees new growth begins to callus over, or compartmentalize the wound. As a rule of thumb, trees with high sap flow such as Maples and Birches should be pruned after August to limit their ‘bleeding’ which makes them unsightly. deciduous trees that flower should be pruned once they are finished blooming. Conifers generally need little to no pruning and typically can be pruned year round.
