What is the best time of the year to watch birds in Iowa, and why?
Iowa is temperate, which means it gets hot summers and snowy winters both. So it has lots of birds that migrate down from the high north in the fall and lots of birds that migrate up from the south in the spring. The best times of year are probably the migratory seasons when all the birds are out and moving. In the spring that’s from March to May, and in the fall that’s from September through December. A complete list of dates for various migratory birds in Iowa is available here: http://www.iowabirds.org/birds/docs/Early_Late.pdf Non-migratory birds should be able to be seen year round, of course.
