What is the best thread forming fastener to use for BASF Plastic Materials?
We recommend a non-thread-cutting fastener unless the material is highly filled (+ 50%). Unreinforced materials (i.e. straight nylon)are generally lower in modulus and more ductile than the high modulus and less ductile materials such as glass-reinforced materials. The trilobe fasteners (Plastite type) seem to do the best for insertion, pull-out, loosening and stripping resistance in most nylons including the reinforced grades. In softer, unreinforced materials, the HiLo fastener works well, as it has more strip-out resistance due to deeper threads. Very highly reinforced nylons may do well with the Plastite or “B” type screws and should be tested. For the very high modulus materials or more brittle materials, thread cutting screws should be considered, since resin deformation is difficult and results in high hoop stresses and potential cracking or splitting. If you are very concerned with loosening due to vibration, other screws are available from ITW Shakeproof.
