depends on how you create/perform/write songs. If you are in a band then each member might contribute, and that would change the writing process completely than if you were solo and writing music yourself. Some people write lyrics and then build a melody over music to the lyrics Some people write the music and then work out the vocals and lyrics over the music. Some peple come up with a melody and write the music and then vocals adding the actual lyrics last. I write music and I use all kinds of different techniques, no single one is better than the other, it just gives me different option when it comes to writing. Since I play guitar, piano, bass and sing, as well as mix and program (drums), I might sit down and write something on guitar first then build the rest of the song around that. Sometimes it starts with a beat and I build from there. Sometimes I write lyrics and build the song around that. Other times I go from an idea in my head, sometimes it is complete and sometimes it goe

You have to get some idea of what is on your mind to write about. I ususally try to write down some random thought on paper and then kind of tie them together. You have to be ready to improvise in this method but I find the words and ideas come together quickly.
