What is the best substrate for a bearded dragon?

It totally depends on the age of the dragon in question. For young ones, I’d recommend paper towels. Not pretty but doesn’t look bad, easy to clean, and no risk of ingesting any. For an older dragon (9 inches), play sand CAN be used, but I wouldn’t recommend it. For my own dragon, her tank is 3/4 tile and the basking area is sandy. I feed her on the tile, so the danger is lessened greatly. I’d really consider pet carpet, tile, or AstroTurf, as an alternative before sand. At least as an alternative for an all sand enclosure, maybe mix it up like I did.
