What is the best string instrument for a tall teenager to play ?
Whoever told you that your daughter had to play piano before learning violin is an idiot. There is no particular correlation between height and choice of instrument. Hand size might be more of a consideration in selecting an instrument, yet I know several very tall and large men with big hands who are wonderful fiddlers and mandolin players (violin and mandolin = small fingerboards). You learn and you adapt, with practice. If your daughter can get around on a tiny ukelele fingerboard, she can get her fingers around on a violin, too, if she wants. I’m a fairly short woman (5’2″) with smallish hands and I played electric bass guitar (long neck, wide distances between frets) for several years when I was in my 20’s. I learned how to stretch my fingers or shift my hand position as needed to get to the notes I needed. Again, you adapt, with practice. If your daughter truly likes the viola and wants to play it because she enjoys the sound, great! But please don’t feel that certain instruments
